- Reading is a central means for getting new information and access to alternative explanation and interpretation. Seeing the importance of reading, it is essential that the teacher teaches their students how to read English well and effectively. The teacher should recognize the problems which appear in the class during reading class. The teacher is also demanded to have appropriate techniques and solutions to handle those problems. This study was conducted on SMP Muhammadiyah 6 Dau Malang because the students entered this school through the tight selection, so this school is supposed to have the high proficiency students. The objectives of this study were to know the techniques used by the teachers to teach reading at the second grade of SMP Muhammadiyah 6 Dau Malang, to identify the difficulties faced by the teacher in using the techniques, and to know the way the teacher solved the difficulties. This study used a descriptive design because it described certain information related to the problem suitable with the current status of phenomena. In this study, the current status phenomena were the techniques, the difficulties, and the solutions of teaching reading at SMPN Muhammadiyah 6 Dau Malang. This study used interview and observation as the instruments of collecting data. The results of this study showed that the teacher used the techniques of pre-reading, whilst-reading, and post-reading activities in teaching reading at the Second Grade of SMP Muhammadiyah 6 Dau Malang, The difficulties faced by the teacher in using the techniques were studentsÂ’ vocabulary mastery and less concentration. To solve the difficulties, the teacher allowed the students find the meaning of difficult words in the dictionary, or the teacher had them discuss together in the class, and divide students into the group which consisted of the mixture between low and high ability students. It can be concluded that the teacher has known the phases of teaching reading. The teacher found many difficulties in implementing the techniques, namely: the studentsÂ’ vocabulary mastery and less concentration. In solving the difficulties, the teacher had done three strategies. One of them was suitable with theory. It means that the teacher preferred to solve the difficulties using her own ways than based on the theory.
