- In this study the researcher tried to identify the use of storytelling in speaking class for seventh grade students of SMP Plus Nurul Hikmah Pamekasan. The research design of this study was descriptive qualitative and the subject of this study was the English teacher who taught seventh grade students, VIIA. Meanwhile, the instrument was observation and interview. The data was analyzed descriptively. The result of the study showed that the teacher used storytelling in speaking class with three stage namely, pre- speaking activity, whilst- speaking activity, and the last post- speaking activity. In pre- speaking teacher brainstorming the material and attracted studentsÂ’ attention by asking the synopsis of some stories that will be presented. In whilst- speaking activity the teacher let students to tell story in front of class. Every group had to ask one of their friends to tell story. When they told story, they must use gesture and intonation according to the character in the story. The student could bring the synopsis of the story to use when they forgot about the plot, vocabulary or etc. The last activity was post- speaking activity, in this stage the teacher gave comment about the performance of the storyteller for every group and asked the message from the story to every group. Moreover, there were some responses from the students about the technique of storytelling used by teacher. Almost all of the students were interested in storytelling technique; they did not feel bored in their speaking class. This storytelling made the atmosphere of the class more enjoyable. Most of them felt that this technique could build them self confidence to speak in front of many people.
