- Teaching English to young learners is different from teaching adult learners, it needs good teaching skills, creativity, preparation, and patience. As the matter of fact, in teaching learning process, delivering the materials to children is not a simple task. Teachers as the studentsÂ’ center in the class should have some methods and strategies to achieve better communication for studentÂ’s understanding. Effective strategies used to overcome communication difficulties for second language learners. Communication strategies are the most important aspect in condition where the speaker or listener lack shared means of understanding. Especially, second language teaching includes teachers in adjusting their talk in the second language so that it can be understood by the learners. The objectives of this study were to know the communication strategy used by the native English teacher in teaching EYL at EF-English First Malang, to know the communication strategy used by the non native English teacher in teaching EYL at EF-English First Malang, and to find out the purposes of the native and non native English teachersÂ’ communication strategies in teaching English to young learners at EF-English First Malang. The design of this study was descriptive qualitative research by taking two English teachers who were teaching English for young learners. They were the native English teacher and the non native English teacher. In collecting the data, the researcher used two kinds of data collection methods: observation and interview. The finding of this study showed that the teachers used communication strategies in teaching EYL at EF-English First Malang. The native English teacherÂ’s communication strategies were: appeal for help, asking for clarification, asking for repetition, and comprehension check. The non native English teacherÂ’s communication strategies were: asking for repetition and comprehension check. The purposes of using those communication strategies were: to stimulate the studentsÂ’ thought, motivate the students to speak actively, make the students understand the teacherÂ’s explanation and get the studentsÂ’ response.
