- Group discussion is one of some methods in cooperative learning. Considering that nowadays life demands us to not only have a personal skill, we need to also have a cooperative skill. Therefore, cooperative learning is appropriate to be implemented to build that kind of skill in students. The objective of this research is to gain some information about the implementation of group discussion in English class, the problems faced by the students during the group discussion, and the solutions prepared by the teacher to solve those problems. In this research, descriptive qualitative design is employed. The population of this research is students in English class SMK Muhammadiyah 1 Kota Malang, and the sample is selected by using cluster random sampling, it is class X TKJ. The data of this research are collected using three kinds of research instruments; they are observation, questionnaires, and interview. The observation is used to gain information of the implementation of group discussion through direct observation; the questionnaires are used to gain information about the problems faced by the students; and the interview is used to gain the information of the solutions prepared by the teacher to solve the problems. From this research, it is found that the implementation of group discussion is already appropriate with the characteristics of cooperative learning strategy. The five most problems faced during the implementation of this methods are debating, social-cohesiveness, unwillingness to participate, fear of speaking, and individual preferences. The solutions prepared by the teacher to solve those problems are by giving the same equal time for each group to have discussion, by minimizing the number of group member, by giving punishment, by allowing the students to mix English and Bahasa Indonesia while having discussion, and by grouping the students in heterogenic type.
