  • Literary work, manifested in its various forms such as a short story, novels, drama, and poetry, represents the condition and employing historical moments existing in the region, country, and world. Literary work plays a role to reveal the truth through their language and symbols behind the works. Song, a lyrical poetry is a representation of music, which can transmit ideas and emotions to its listeners. U2, an Ireland music band, with their concerns, attempted to imply their ideas through the songs they sung and brought the listeners to the events inspiring them in writing the songs. The three major purposes considered being the main problems in analyzing U2’s songs were to: (1) find out the themes of U2’s songs, (2) figure out the meaning and message expressed by the song’s writer, and (3) describe the historical events inspiring the song writing. The study uses descriptive qualitative design to analyze the data. The approaches that were suitable with this analysis were objective and historical approach. The objective approach was used because she stressed on the song’s physical and explained the meanings in an entirely objective way. Historical approach was used to find basic clues related to the events behind the lyrics writing in the current times. The population of this study was 21 songs and 2 songs were selected. The songs were: (1) Sunday Bloody Sunday, and (2) Staring At The Sun. The results of this study were: (1) The theme of “Sunday Bloody Sunday” was the battle. The message conveyed in the song was: A conflict later would cause sufferings for people. The historical event that lied behind the song was the tragedy Bloody Sunday that occurred at Northern Ireland in 1972. (2) The theme of “Staring At The Sun was fear and restlessness. The message carried in the song was: An old long dispute was the latent threat that could appear unexpectedly. The historical event inspiring the song was the riots that appeared at Northern Ireland on 1990s during the peace process in the country.
