  • Encouraging non-English speaking country students to speak English in the target language is not always easy. There are several reasons why this is the case. One of the possible reasons is speaking anxiety, especially for the students in SMP Negeri 3 Batu. This study analyzed the kinds of studentsÂ’ anxiety, the factors which caused studentsÂ’ anxiety, and the teachersÂ’ ways to alleviate their studentsÂ’ anxiety dealing with learning English speaking as a foreign language. This study used a qualitative method as the appropriate way to analyze and obtain specific information about the opinions and behaviors of particular subjects. The subjects of this research were English teachers and students of the 9th grade as the highest level of SMP Negeri 3 Batu. The instruments used by the writer were unstructured interview and observation. The result of this study showed that students in SMP Negeri 3 Batu experienced two kinds of anxiety; trait anxiety and state anxiety. The factors which caused the speaking anxiety (either trait or state) were psychological, instructional, and situational setting. Considering that speaking anxiety is a big problem for the students in SMP Negeri 3 Batu, the teachers used three main strategies to alleviate their studentsÂ’ anxiety (either trait or state), namely problem-focused coping, emotion-focused coping, and avoidance-oriented coping.
