- Literature is a part of language. Literature also studies the language as media used in collection of book that it is paraphrased by beautiful language. One of literary works is novel which describes social reality. It shows the readers about the mirror of people’s life. The writer took “The Help”, novel written by Kathryn Stockett to be analyzed in this study because there are many kinds of emotions by Hilly Holbrook as the main character. The objectives of this study are to identify Hilly Holbrook’s emotion, to describe the ways, and to find out the effects of Hilly Holbrook toward her black women maid in Kathryn Stockett’s novel “The Help”. The research design of this study was descriptive qualitative, because this study does not present the data in numerical analysis, but in the form of words. In this case, the data are all events of Kathryn Stockett novel. Psychoanalytic criticism is used as an approach in analyzing this thesis because this study is about to explain the emotion which happened in the novel. In collecting the data, the writer reads and comprehends the novel The Help written by Kathryn Stockett, choosing the data dealing with the problems which became the focus of the study, selecting the data which were related to the purpose of the study on the novel, rewriting all of the data which had been chosen based on the original quotations in the novel. In conclusion, the finding showed that there are some emotions found and experienced by Hilly Holbrook in the novel The Help, such as: anger, fear, and anxiety. Among those emotions were described by words and by actions. The emotions of fear and anxiety emotions were described by words. Meanwhile, anger emotion is described by both word and action. The effects caused by emotions belonged to Hilly Holbrook’s character toward her black women maid is bad effects. The bad effects were Hilly fought in the party that was caused by anger emotion, Hilly asked Minny to work for her again that was caused by anxiety emotion, and Hilly ate Minny’s droppings that were caused by anger emotion.
