  • This research concerns with scientific approach in teaching writing used by the English teacher at SMAN 4 MALANG. In addition, the purpose of this research is to describe the implementation of scientific approach in teaching writing used by the English teacher at SMAN 4 MALANG. This research used descriptive qualitative as research design. The researcher used subject of the study to describe the implementation of scientific approach in teaching writing used by the English teacher at SMAN 4 MALANG. The subject is one English teacher of X IBB I in SMAN 4 MALANG. Moreover, the instruments that used in this research were a semi- structure interview, observation, and documentation. Based on the result of the data analysis, it was found that the implementation of scientific approach in teaching writing used by the English teacher at SMAN 4 MALANG was maximally although it was not implemented in every meeting. Therefore, the teacher faced many obstacles like the lack of materials for writing skill and lack of time. Lack of materials for writing was caused by most of materials were text dialog, then to solve this obstacle the teacher should provide other source side of book to get a lot of materials. Then lack of time obstacle caused by the time that given by the government for English skill in obligatory subject was only 2 hours (2x45 minutes) in every week. Furthermore, in implementing scientific approach in the class, the teacher has applied authentic assessment although it was not for all meetings. The teacher evaluated the students' skill competences by using their project of making descriptive text about their friend's. Next, the teacher evaluated the students' attitudes competences when they were paying attention to the learning process, presenting a question, exploring and associating the information.
