- Translation and idiom are important studies to improve the ability in mastering English. English is wealthy of idioms as other great and civilized languages are. An idiom is a frozen pattern with no variation in form. Often their meaning cannot be understood by translating individual constituents. Some idioms can become traps for translator since they have concealed meaning. In fact, to become a good translator, a translator should know the purpose of the writer upon writing the source language. Therefore, the strategies of translating idioms are needed to cope with the problems in translating idioms. The researcher uses five strategies that are suggested by Baker (1992) for translating idioms, those are: using an idiom of similar meaning and form, using an idiom of similar meaning but different form, translation by paraphrasing, translation by omission, and translation by compensation. This research aimed at identifying the strategies for translating English idioms into Bahasa Indonesia in recount text used by seventh semester students of English Department in Translation class. In addition, this study also focused on analyzing the most commonly used strategy. This study highlighted on the strategies in translating English idiom into Bahasa Indonesia. This study used mixed method research design. The samples were chosen by using simple random sample which resulted 22 samples from 2 classes. The samples were given worksheets about English recount text with some idioms on it. Translation products of the students became document for the researcher to be analyzed as the data in this research. As a result, it can be concluded that there were only four strategies used by students. Those were Strategy 1 (using an idiom of similar meaning and form), Strategy 2 (using an idiom of similar meaning but different form), Strategy 3 (translation by paraphrasing), and Strategy 4 (translation by omission). The most frequently used strategy was strategy of translating by paraphrasing or Strategy 3 with 79 findings (74.52%); the second position was strategy by using an idiom with similar meaning and form or it can be called as Strategy 1 with only 12 findings (11.32%) which had same result as strategy by using idiom with similar meaning but different form or Strategy 2 (11.32%); and the last strategy used was omission with only 3 results (2.83%). In other words, the most common strategy in translating idiom was translating by paraphrasing. It was further investigated that the choice of translating by paraphrasing is mostly chosen because it is flexible than any other strategies. The other consideration might be that the translators cannot find the appropriate idiomatic language in target language.
