  • Thesis is scientific writing of student before graduating from university. Writing thesis is not just translating into words the images of our thoughts because the students are demanded to explore their ideas to solve a new problem. StudentsÂ’ ability in writing thesis itself has relationship with motivation as a support for the students because motivation can make students energized, supported, and directed, which leads them going better from before. The purpose of this research is to know the studentsÂ’ motivation and the dominant motivation in writing thesis at English department of University of Muhammadiyah Malang. This research used a survey. It has objectives to identify and qualify the studentsÂ’ motivation in writing thesis. This research used questionnaires to collect the data. The population in this study was students of English Department of University Muhammadiyah of Malang who are writing thesis in academic year 2013/2014. The researcher took 52 of 261 students or 20% from the total population as the sample of this research. The finding showed that there were 12 factors that motivate student in writing thesis at English department of University of Muhammadiyah Malang. Eight factors were for intrinsic motivation such as; self-efficacy, self-determination, self-esteem, anxiety, expectation and values, interest, goals, and studentsÂ’ attributions. Meanwhile, four factors are for extrinsic motivation such as; punishment, reward, reinforcement, and incentives. These factors are strong willing that coming from inside and outside oneself that are capable to make impact for individuals to do certain activities to obtain certain aims. From the result of the questionnaire, the mean score obtained by the students in intrinsic motivation which as the finding also showed that intrinsic motivation was more dominant than extrinsic motivation. The mean score obtained by the students in intrinsic motivation was 43.5 and studentsÂ’ extrinsic motivation was 30.9. Thus, it can be conclude that the mean score of intrinsic studentsÂ’ motivation was higher than extrinsic motivation.
