- This research concerns with the implementation of scientific approach in teaching reading at SMAN 3 Malang. Scientific approach is also learning to motivate the students capable in observing, questioning, exploring, associating, and communicating. One of language skills that should be learnt by English learners is reading. Reading is the most important activity in any language class. The purpose of the research is to describe the implementation of scientific approach in teaching reading for ten grade sttudents at SMAN 3 Malang. This research was descriptive research as research design. Here, the researcher used subject of the study. The research subject of this study was only one English teacher in SMAN 3 Malang as the informant to get more data about the implementation of scientific approach in teaching reading. The teacher teaches at class MIA-5 of first grade. The instruments that were used in this study were a semi structure interview, observation, and document analysis. It was found that the implementation of scientific approach in teaching reading used by the teacher at SMAN 3 Malang was not maximally yet because the time that given by the government for English skill class was 2 hours (2x45) minutes in 1 meeting. Thus, the teacher modified the topic for next meeting and asked the students to search and learn at home. The English teacher gave the material about descriptive and explanation text and the focused social function, generic structure, and element language. In implementation of teaching reading that were used English teacher were three phases of teaching reading, such as: (a) pre-teaching: branstroming by showing some pictures and explaned the material about descriptive and explanation text, (b) while-teaching: observation, questioning, exploring, assosiating, and communicating, (c) post-teaching: concluded of result about the material and get feedback. Therefore, the evaluation learning process the English teacher at SMAN 3 Malang used authentic assessment but it was not maximal. The teacher evaluated the students skill competences such as by asking them presentation, discuss with the group about descriptive and explanation text.
