- Language learning strategies are a series of plan employed by students to create efficient and effective learning. It is widely believed that language learning strategies are fundamental tools to achieve learning goals. All of students employ these strategies once they learn English language, specifically on grammar, even they are first year students of second language learners. This study intentionally focused on the language learning strategies applied by first year students in mastering grammar at English Department of University Muhammadiyah Malang. Furthermore, this study also examined the factors influencing students to choose the language learning strategies on grammar mastery. This study was conducted on descriptive qualitative design which was purposefully applied to get rich data of the topic discussed. The research subject of this study was second semester students of English department, University of Muhammadiyah Malang academic years 2013-2014, specifically for those who agreed on the determined criteria. There were two participants selected based on the purposive sampling. Those participants were involved on questionnaire, observation and interview section to encounter the needed data. The researcher found that there were compensation strategies, meta-cognitive strategies, cognitive strategies and social strategies employed by first year students in mastering grammar. On learning activities, students sometimes simultaneously employed two or more strategies in order to manage their indefinite learning condition. In addition, there were six factors influencing participants to choose the language learning strategies in mastering grammar. There were intrinsic and extrinsic motivations, age, learning style, language proficiency, environment and hobby or pleasure. Those factors directly and indirectly influenced students to find the appropriate language learning strategies. Mastering grammarby employing language learning strategies above helps students to find their powerful tool of learning which may encourage them to achieve learning goals. Nevertheless, the presence of language learning strategies factors must be noticed, because these factors contribute to the students` success learning.
