  • Racism is one of facts occurring in human social life. It is the generalization to people which is usually negative because of their race. In this study, “The Help” novel was analyzed because it contains racism problem among the characters. In addition, racism in this novel is really intense and symbolic. It means that the racism problem in this novel could cause a problem. The research design of this study was a qualitative research, because this study focused on analyzing human behavior, namely racism among the characters. In addition, the data of this study were not presented in numerical analysis. In collecting the data, the writer read “The Help” novel, selecting script which contains racism, identified the data which were categorized into racism, selected data related to the purpose of the study, and rewrote all of the data about racism which depicted in “The Help” novel. The finding showed that racism in “The Help” novel was described clearly through the characters that disliked each other between colored and white races. The kind of racism in “The Help” novel was symbolic racism, the reason of racism was race, and the way to solve racism by using contact hypothesis. In conclusion, racism in “The Help” novel made certain people feel superior and inferior because racism made certain people accept discriminative treatment. The discriminative treatment caused the conflicts among the characters and made the characters in “The Help” novel hating each other.
