  • People tend to choose the strategies for polite conversation in the purposeof achieving their final goal by maintaining otherÂ’s face. Politeness is the powerdistancerelationship of the interactants and the extent to which a speaker imposeson or requires something from their addressee. Moreover, theresearcher chooses politeness strategies to investigate politeness phenomena inthe third presidential debate on foreign policy between Barack Obama vs. Mitt Romney. The descriptive qualitative is used to conduct this research. The reason isto describe and to explain the politeness phenomena in the third presidential debate on foreign policy between Barack Obama vs. Mitt Romney. In addition, this study presents the data in the forms ofwords or utterances rather than numbers which rely very much on the richnarrative description. The result of the study shows that four strategies are applied by both Obama and Romney in their debate. First, Bald on record strategy which isused in the situation in which Barack Obama or Mitt Romney wants to achieve the maximum efficiency of hisutterance. Second, Positive Politeness Strategy which is used in the condition inwhich Barack Obama or Mit Romney tries to minimize the distance between expressing friendliness and solidinterest. Third, Negative Politeness Strategy which is used in the situation inwhich Barack Obama or Mitt Romney has the main focus on assuming that he may be imposing and intrudingon one of them space. Fourth, off Record Strategy which is used by Barack Obama or Mitt Romney in the condition to takesome pressures off the hearer (one of them). From those four strategies the most dominant strategy used by Barack Obama and Mitt Romney was positive politeness strategy.
