  • Teachers play a very important role in the process of teaching and learning English in school. One of the most significant problems faced by the English teacher is lack of studentsÂ’ active participation in English classes. To overcome the problem, the teacher must be able to give motivation and to guide the students in the direction of a good learning. Reinforcement is one of the important tools of motivation in teaching and learning. Giving reinforcement can be done verbally and non-verbally, with the principle of warmth, enthuasiasm, meaningful and avoiding negative response. Reinforcement can be directed to specific personal and to the whole classes. In the implementation, reinforcement should be given immediately and varied, so that the reinforcement is expected to make the students do better. The purposes of this study were: (1) to describe the kinds of reinforcement given by the teacher, (2) to describe the techniques the teacher uses to give reinforcement to the students and (3) to describe the studentsÂ’ perception toward the reinforcement given by the teacher. This study used descriptive research methods to conduct the research. The sample of this research were 25 students of second class SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Babat. The instruments used to gather the data were observation fieldnote, interview guide and questionnaire. The findings of this study showed that the kinds of reinforcement that were often used by the English teacher in classroom were positive reinforcement in the form of praise, approval and bonus point. There was purposed to generate studentsÂ’ motivation and to encourage studentsÂ’ active participation in teaching and learning process in class. Therefore, in teaching English the teacher used verbal and non-verbal technique in giving reinforcement to improve the studentsÂ’ spirit in learning English and to eliminate fear among the students. Finally, the students stated that using positive reinforcement through verbal and non-verbal techniques could make progress and improvement for them in learning English. They becomes actively to participate in classroom when their teacher gave them positive reinforcement after they performed well.
