  • The learnerÂ’s success in learning English is mostly determined by their mastery of the four language skills: listening, writing, reading and speaking. One of the most important skills that should be mastered by the students is speaking. Therefore, this study was intended to know the difficulties of learning speaking, the causes of the difficulties of learning speaking, and the ways to cope with them. The research design of this study was descriptive qualitative research because the writer only explained the current conditions that happened. The instruments used were questionnaire and interview. Moreover the population in this study was the second semester students of English Department at University Muhammadiyah of Malang of 2014 consiting of ten classes. The total of number population was 252 students. The writer took 25% of 252 students so there were 63 students as the respondents. The findings of this study showed that the students faced some difficulties. The first was the difficulty to speak with the correct structure or grammar. Then, they had difficulties in vocabulary. Besides, they had difficulties in the studentsÂ’ habit of using the mother tongue that gaveeffects to the studentsÂ’ pronunciation, intonation, and accuracy in learning speaking English. The causes of students difficulties of learning speaking were 1) The students had few vocabulary items so they could not practice their speaking 2) They felt difficult to make sentences. 3) The students had difficulties in learning speaking English because they were not confident to speak with correct pronunciation, intonation, and accuracy. Most of the students solved their difficulties by 1) Making notes of vocabulary. 2) Listening to the record of native speakers, watching films, 3) Learning the right pronunciation and right spelling to solve their difficulties.
