- This study aimed at analyzing written English colloquial words used by digital natives in tweeting. This study tried to analyze English colloquial words used by digital natives in their twitter status updates. The research is based on the fact that the results of digital native students often use English colloquial words in their daily conversation. Colloquial word is a word or phrase that uses contraction, abbreviated utterance, and connecting words and phrases which is usually used in conversation. The objectives of this study are to know the colloquial words used by digital natives in tweeting and identify the types of the colloquial words. This study uses descriptive qualitative research design, because this study try to analyze, find the meaning, and understand the English colloquial words found in twitter. Another reason is because this study attempts to describe the phenomenon that happened in human life and are hard to measure the data quantitatively since the data were in the form of words, utterance, or conversation. The object of this study is the English colloquial words used by digital native students in twitter. The number of the digital natives that is being researched is fifteen twitter users as my followers selectively. Moreover, the instrument is applied using document analysis that include written or text based artifacts. The result of this study shows that there are fifty five colloquial words. They are divided into two types, namely literary colloquial word and familiar colloquial word. This study found forty eight colloquial words categorized as literary colloquial words, and seven colloquial words categorized as familiar colloquial words. Thus, the most English colloquial words used by digital native students are literary colloquial word, because it is chiefly used in writing and making the conversation easier. From the literary colloquial word, the most common colloquial words used by digital natives in tweeting are phonetic feature and the least common colloquial words are morphological feature. Moreover, from the familiar colloquial word, the most colloquial words are lexical feature and the least common colloquial words are morphological feature, this may be due to that digital natives got difficulties how to combine words to create the collocation, because they are not English native speaker.
