- The learner’s success in leaning English was mostly determined by their mastery of the four language skill, such as listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Each of the skills has to be mastered by the learner as well as possible. In teaching learning English process at junior high school, vocabulary has an important role in student’s communication, because those students in junior high school are poor in vocabulary. This study was focused on the teaching technique applied by the English teacher in teaching vocabulary for the second year students in SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Malang. The purposes of the study were: 1) to know the techniques used by the teacher in teaching English vocabulary for the second year students in SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Malang. 2) to know how the teacher implements the techniques in teaching English vocabulary for second year students in SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Malang. 3) to know the students’ responses toward the techniques of teaching English vocabulary for second year students in SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Malang. The research design used this in study was descriptive qualitative. The subjects of this study were one English teacher and 33 students from grade VIII A at SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Malang. The instruments used to collect the data were interview, questionnaire and observation. The findings showed that the techniques applied by the teacher in teaching English vocabulary were communicative, role play, games, question-answer display, brainstorming, and report. Meanwhile the students’ responses were very good and very enthusiastic to make the students interested in learning English vocabulary.
