  • In todayÂ’s global age, English speaking ability is one of important skills to be owned, because this language is internationally spoken all over the globe. The speaking skill is measured in terms of ability to carry out a conversation in the language. While In Indonesia English is a foreign language, it is understandable that minority of Indonesian people can speak English. Therefore as an English teacher should know how to teach, how to choose appropriate technique and how to apply the technique in teaching speaking. This study was proposed to investigate: (1) what is the teacherÂ’s technique to teach speaking English at first grade and, (2) how is studentsÂ’ perception about the technique used by the English teacher in teaching speaking English at first grade of SMP Al-Irrsyad Banyuwangi. The research design of this study was mixed methods to collect data or information that would be used to answer the questions in the instrument of the problem where the subject of this study was English teacher and for studentsÂ’ response at first grade, the writer chose purposive sampling at class E. the instruments used are interview, observation and, questionnaire. The findings of this study showed that there were five teaching techniques were used in teaching speaking by the English teacher at first grade of SMP Al-Irsyad Banyuwangi, the teacher use the technique of sentence correction, sentence repetition, question and answer, discussion and, storytelling. And the score of the studentsÂ’ response was 65.9, it indicates that the studentsÂ’ response was positive or good.
