  • This study is composed to find out the readability level of reading text in the English textbook for second grade junior high school with entitled “When English Rings a Bell” using Flesch Reading Ease formula. The method which is used in this research is descriptive qualitative. The procedure of calculating the readability score is begun by collecting the reading text, calculating the component for calculating readability score such as the total word, total syllable, the average word per sentence, and the average of syllable per sentence. Then, the next step is analyzing the data and continue to the interpreting the data. The last step is concluding the result of the study. The result showed that the average of the readability score is 90.26. This average score belongs to easy style and available to 6th grade. The highest score is 99.631 which belongs to the very easy style and appropriate for 5th grade elementary school. Then, the lowest score is 67.247 which belongs to standard style and appropriate for 8th and 9th grade junior high school. The most dominant or 93.3% or fourteen texts in the textbook are appropriate to elementary school. Then, the rest 6.66 % or one text in the textbook which belongs to second grade junior high school. It can conclude that the reading text on the textbook are readable for elementary school. So, this text in the textbook should rearrange again to make it appropriate for second grade junior high school.
