- This research aimed to determine and describe the errors in using simple past tense in writing recount text made by the eighth students of SMPN 11 Malang. This research was conducted due to the fact that there were many errors in using simple past tense in writing recount text made by the eighth grade students of SMPN 11 Malang. This research used a qualitative research design. A qualitative research design was used to determine and describe the errors and the frequency of errors in using simple past tense in writing recount text made by the eighth grade students of SMPN 11 Malang. A document analysis was used as the research instrument because the data were obtained by conducting the test. The type of test was students’ recount text related to the topic “My Holiday”. The population of this research was 243 students. In selecting the sample, the researcher chose 24 students by conducting proportional random sampling. In analyzing the data, the researcher used Surface Strategy Taxonomy. Then, the researcher did some steps such as identifying the errors, classifying the errors, and calculating the errors to determine the frequency of errors. The result of data analysis showed that there were three types of errors made by students in writing recount text. There were omission errors, addition errors, and misformation errors. There were 110 total errors made by eighth grade students in writing recount text. Meanwhile, the frequency of errors made by the students in writing recount text showed that frequency of omission errors was 24.5%, addition errors was 30%, and misformation errors was 45.4%. Furtheremore, the highest frequency of errors was misformation errors whereas the lowest frequency of errors was omission errors.
