IMPROVING STUDENTSÂ’ SPEAKING ABILITY IN SECOND GRADE AT SMA DARUSSYAHID SAMPANG THROUGH DEBATE

  • Speaking is an interactive process of constructing meaning that involves producing receiving and processing information. However, in most Indonesian schools, students neglect the development of speaking ability. Although most of them have strong desire to use English for their communication with their friends or other people around them but they are reluctant to speak because they are afraid of making mistakes and failing to find suitable words to express themselves well. Because of this issue, the researcher used classroom action research to carry out the research and formulated the assumption that debate can be used in the teaching of speaking. The subject of this study was second class in SMA Darusyahid Sampang in the academic year 2015/2016. The researcher used two cycles in his research. In the first cycle, the researcher found that the students were still passive in doing their speaking activity, they could not speak fluently. Further, they get difficulties in giving rebuttal to opponent teamÂ’s opinion. For second cycle, the researcher found that the students had positive attitude in learning process. This was proven by the studentsÂ’ test score that is improved from the last cycle. In the first cycle, the studentsÂ’ average score was 51.3 and the students got 75.83in the second cycle. In the first cycle, the researcher started the activities by brainstorming. In this activity, the researcher gave motivation and asked some questions to the students. In the main activity, the researcher conducted free debate without any rules. In the second cycle, the researcher gave additional information related to the debate procedure. The researcher changed the topic of the debate. The researcher explained and reviewed the debate. The explanation and review of the debate made the students understand and motivated them in order to be able to speak without having burden. This success was also caused by the researcherÂ’s plan who prepared the topic which concerned with the studentsÂ’ needs beforehand. Moreover, the researcher was also giving the students some phrases that mostly are used in delivering opinion or arguments to other debaters. As a result, the researcher found out that the studentsÂ’ response toward the debate system was quite good. The data from the daily assessment showed that debate could give positive effect on the studentsÂ’ speaking ability.
