- This research is conducted in order to improve XI grade studentsÂ’ English communicative competence in SMAN 1 Malang through Role Play model. This research is related to the result of observation that showed that the students were low in motivation, communicative competence, speaking practice, and confidence. This research used a Classroom Action Research (CAR) which is conducted to solve the studentsÂ’ problem in learning English especially speaking. The Classroom Action Research was done based on Kurt Lewin design. The researcher did two cycles consist of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The research is qualitative. The objectives of the research are to describe: (1) the improvement of English communicative competence of 11th grade students in SMAN 1 Malang; (2) the activity of 11th grade students in the class during the implementation of role-play model in SMAN 1 Malang;. The finding of this research indicated the implementation of role play model was successful as the criteria of success was achieved. The first criterion was the classical mean score of studentsÂ’ English communicative competence that had to achieve 75. The result of studentsÂ’ communicative competence mean score is 80,19 which is categorized as very good and successful. 53,12% students achieved very good score (80-100). Moreover, the second criterion was the score of role play model implementation that had to achieve 75. The result of role play model implementation was 83 which was categorized as very good. The result of observation showed that by using role play model, students were actively involved in the classroom, confidence, and motivated. Based on these finding, the researcher suggests that the English teachers could implement role play in teaching English in order to motivate students in learning English speaking.
