  • Academic plagiarism and inappropriate quoting source have drawn much attention in many years. Research has shown that reasons behind studentsÂ’ textual transgression include lack of knowledge about plagiarism and technique of quoting. Plagiarism simply means cutting and pasting other ideas or studies and taking credit for it. There are two kinds of technique to avoid plagiarism. Those are direct quotation and indirect quotation (paraphrase and summary). This study aims to explore techniques of quoting and the most dominant technique that is used by students in their thesis chapter II. Also, it is followed by finding out the reason of the students using the techniques. Qualitative research method was employed in collecting data. The data was collected through document analysis and interview as its instruments. The participants of the study were thesis writers in English Department of University of Muhammadiyah Malang. The result of the analysis showed that the students used direct quotation, paraphrase, and summary. Paraphrasing becomes the most dominant technique that is used by the students in this study. The result of interview showed that the students tended to use direct quotation than other techniques. The most dominant reason behind using direct quotation is because the students found it difficult to paraphrase source into their own words. Also, incidences of plagiarism such as exact copying appeared in this study.
