- This study deals with the teaching methods used by the teacher in teaching speaking to the first grade students of SMA Yayasan Pandaan. The purposes of this study are to investigate the teaching methods used by teacher, how the teacher implements the methods, the difficulties faced by the teacher, and how the teacher copes with the difficulties. The design of the study was descriptive design. The research subject of this study was an English teacher of SMA Yayasan Pandaan. The data were collected through observation and interview. The result showed that the teacher implemented three methods in teaching speaking. They were communicative language teaching, direct method, and community language learning. In implementing those methods, the teacher faced some difficulties. The teacherÂ’s difficulties were to make the students active during the class, increase studentsÂ’ enthusiasm to learn or speak English, and keep the students speak the target language. The teacherÂ’s ways to cope with those difficulties were asking the students to work in group, creating new atmosphere in class, and asking the students to keep speaking the target language. Finally the writer has suggestion for English teacher to apply other teaching methods besides the three teaching methods used in this study. Moreover, further researchers are hoped to study teaching methods in other skills or investigate the students’ difficulties when the teacher is implementing teaching methods.
