  • In this research, the researcher focuses on the teaching methods used by English teacher in teaching speaking of first level at “Kursus Bahasa Asing” University of Muhammadiyah Malang. The purposes of the study are to analyze the teaching methods used by English teacher in teaching speaking of first level at “Kursus Bahasa Asing” University of Muhammadiyah Malang and to know the students’ responses toward teaching methods used by English teacher in teaching speaking of first level at “Kursus Bahasa Asing” University of Muhammadiyah Malang. This study used descriptive qualitative to obtain and analyze the data. The subject of the study was the English teacher in English for communication 1 beginners (first level) class. The data of the research were obtained from the fieldnotes observation and interview transcript. Participant observation was chosen to get information about the teaching methods used by the English teacher in teaching speaking and the students’ responses toward teaching method in teaching speaking. Moreover, unstructured interview was used to get more information about the teaching method and to verify the misleading data that obtain while conducting the observation. Based on the data, the researcher found that the English teacher in English for communication 1 beginners (first level) class used direct method and community language learning in teaching speaking. In implementing direct method, the teacher used questions and answer exercise, conversation practice, and getting students to self correct activity. Besides, in implementing community language learning, the teacher used small group task, and reflection on experience. In using those methods, the students’ responses was good. The students were able active to communicate with others in English, get more confidence, enjoyed the class, and involved in teaching and learning process of speaking in the class. They were able to understand how to use the target language communicatively.
