  • This study focused on semantic and pragmatic analysis of Holy QurÂ’an Surah An-Nisa verse 3 and 34 lexically and contextually in both versions (English-Indonesian). Studying QurÂ’an is not easy to comprehend the meaning. There are many differences of meaning when people examine it. Verse 3 and 34 told about polygamy and the obligation between men and women as a couple in the family. In those cases, perhaps those two verses were often misunderstood by both Muslims and non-Muslims. This was a comparative analysis of translating between English and Indonesian version interpreted by The Minister of Religion and Abdullah Yusuf Ali. The research problems of this study were as follows (1) what are the lexical meanings of surah An-Nisa verse 3 and 34 interpreted by The Minister of Religion and Abdullah Yusuf Ali? (2) what are the contextual meanings of surah An-Nisa verse 3 and 34 interpreted by the Minister of Religion and Abdullah Yusuf Ali? Descriptive qualitative research was adopted because the writer would like to find out the lexical meanings of surah An-Nisa on those verses semantically and to analyze the contextual meaning of surah An-Nisa on those verses pragmatically. The instrument to collect the data was the writer using a document analysis. The data of this study were English and Indonesian translation versions of Holy QurÂ’an Surah An-Nisa verse 3 and 34. After analyzing the data in both versions, lexical meaning in both versions of Surah An-Nisa verse 3 was almost the same. However, there are several different translations from English to Indonesian. For example, seems suitable becomes baik/senangi, and (is) more appropriate becomes lebih dekat. Meanwhile, lexical meaning in both versions on verse 34 was almost the same. However, there are several translations that are less equivalent in English to Indonesian version. For example, against them becomes atas/terhadap mereka, a way becomes jalan untuk menyusahkan. The contextual meaning in both versions on verse 3 was the same. In contrast, there was one different verb in both versions on verse 34. For example, “Protectors and maintainers” in English version becomes pelindung. English version adds word “maintainers”, not for in Indonesian that sticks to original version of Arabic. It shows the difference between English and Indonesian verbs based on Arabic version. To conclude, the result of this study showed that the different translation on lexical meaning in both verses produces the same interpretation. Likewise, the distinction of verb on contextual meaning in verse 34 produces the same interpretation or meaning.
