- Vocabulary is an inseparable part of any language learning process. It would be impossible to learn a language without vocabulary because it supports all of the English skill such as listening, speaking, reading and writing. However, as a result that the students’ achievement in English was not satisfactory. So, the researcher want to apply short story as one of interesting materials used to improve the students’ vocabularies. This study used quasi-experimental research design. The researcher divided the classroom into experimental group and control group. In this case, the experimental group was given a treatment using short story and the control group was thought without using short story. The population in this study was all of the eighth-grade students of SMPN 2 Pamekasan which were divided into eight classes. The researcher used cluster sampling to select the sample. Based on the result of pre-test, it was found that the mean scores of the experimental group was 53.54 and for control group was 55.62. Based on finding of post-test it was found that there is significant difference on the students’ vocabularies achievement between the experimental and control group. The mean score of experimental group was 70 while control group was 64.37. This score means that the average of students’ score between experimental and control group is still less from Standard Minimum Criteria (KKM) in that school. Whereas standard score of the English Subject from KKM in that school is 75. Moreover, after being computed by using t-test it was found that the value of ttest was 2.961. Based on the t-table in the dƒ of 46, the value of ttable on the degree of significance 5% is 2.01 and ttable on the degree of significance 1% is 2.68. The data showed that the value of ttest was greater than the t-table. So, this treatment improves students’ vocabularies but it cannot reach the minimal standard of score in KKM in the school. Therefore, the alternative hypothesis stated that short story improves students’ vocabulary mastery is accepted.
