  • Speaking is one of the important skills in people daily communication. Many people use English as means of communication with others. They sometimes think that the success of learning English is measured by the ability to speak. Therefore, the teacher should know the appropriate methods of teaching speaking. The purposes of the study were to get the information of the methods and its implementation of those methods. The research design used in this study was a descriptive qualitative research. The subject of this research was an English First teacher. Observation checklist and structured interview were used to collect and analyzed the data. The result of this study showed that the English teacher of English First Course (EF) applied discussion and brainstorming method in teaching speaking. In discussion method the activities are talking each other especially in group discussion about the topic or issue that was given by the teacher. The students must share their ideas about that topic and discussed with their partners in group. Meanwhile, in brainstorming method the teacher applied asking and answering questions to stimulate the students to speak up more in English. The students just gave their own answers without criticizing from the teacher.
