  • The focus on this study was on the teaching techniques used by the teacher in teaching vocabulary at SMP Muhammadiyah 8 Batu. The objectives of this study were 1) to know the techniques used by the teacher in teaching vocabulary, 2) to know the way how to implement these techniques, 3) to know the advantages of these techniques. This study was limited to the English teacher who taught at seventh grade students at SMP Muhammadiyah 8 Batu. This study used descriptive design in conducting the data related to the problems. There were two instruments used in conducting the data which were observation and interview. Furthermore, the researcher set up the observational checklist to know the teaching vocabulary techniques and the way how to implement the techniques. The researcher also used tape recorder in recording interview with the teacher to know the advantages of these techniques. The findings showed that the teacher used four techniques in teaching vocabulary. They were visual, translation, dialogue, and games. The teacher had various ways in implementing the techniques. She implemented the techniques depended on the situations and studentsÂ’ conditions. First, visual technique, in realia, the teacher pointed toward “date”, “day”, “month”, and “year” and in picture, the teacher showed the pictures one by one to the students and pronounced the vocabulary loudly. Second, translation technique, she translated word by word then she asked the students to write it with the translation in their writing book. Third, dialogue technique, the teacher gave an example first by asking one student then the student continued the dialogue with their friends. The last is game technique, the game was called “whatÂ’s the time?”. The teacher explained the rule before playing this games. There were several advantages of the techniques. It was very useful for both of the teacher and the students.
