- This research studied about the use of teaching method in speaking class to the first semester students of Psychology Department academic year 2014/2015. The researcher was interested in this study based on the fact that teaching method was one of the factors that influence the success of teaching and learning processes. The research problems in this study were (1) What kinds of teaching methods are used by the ESP lecturer in teaching speaking to the first semester students of Psychology Department academic year 2014/2015? (2) What are the problems faced by the lecturer in using the methods? (3) How does the lecturer try to solve the problems in using the methods? The aims of this study were to investigate the teaching method used by the lecturer, the problems and problem solving that appear in the process of implementing the teaching method.This study used qualitative descriptive design to obtain and analyze the data. The subject of this study was one ESP English lecturer at University of Muhammadiyah Malang who applied various teaching methods for teaching speaking in some departments. Interview and observation were used to collect the data. Unstructured interview was chosen to get information about the teaching method used by the lecturer, the problems and problem solving that appear in the process of implementing the teaching method. Besides, the researcher used non participant observation. The aims of this observation were to verify the interview information and get some information that was not covered from the interview.Based on the data collection, the researcher found that the lecturer applied Communicative Language Teaching as her teaching method in both of observations on 17th and 24thDecember, 2014. In addition, the researcher found some problems and the problems solving in the process of teaching and learning. Those problems were the students were bored, were crowded and did not focus with the learning activity in the class. Moreover, sometimes the students were not interesting in the method or game that the lecturer used. In addition, the students were too active that made the lecturer could not control the class. In additions, the lecturer solved those problems by creating interesting activities, designing simple activities, such as “simulation” and “making something”, motivating the students, and giving point
