- There are some literary works which can be elaborated into deep analysis. They are letter, novel, drama, poetry, etc. Drama is one of the literary works and movie is one of the examples of drama. Movie also has a story that is written and has a screen as the media, there are some elements of movie which can be analyzed such as character, plot, conflict, setting, etc. so that, individual conflict faced by the main character in “Life of Pi” movie was analyzed in this researcher. The purpose of the study is to find out kinds of individual conflict faced by the main character in “Life of Pi” movie directed by Ang Lee. It aims to know causes of individual conflict faced by the main character and to know how the main character solves his individual conflict. This study used descriptive qualitative research as the research design because this study focused on understanding and interpreting the data through the event of conflicts faced by the main character in “Life of Pi” Movie. Moreover, objective approach was employed because the writer wanted to analyze the main character in this movie. The results of this study showed that there were three individual conflicts faced by the main character in “Life of Pi” Movie; psychological conflict, social conflict, and physical conflict. The psychological conflict happened when Piscine Molitor Patel felt empty in his life caused by the termination of his father’s lesson and he solved by joining the music class. Another conflict faced by piscine was he learned three religions that made he had an inner conflict that occurred in his life, and finally he believed in the three religions to solve his inner conflict. Also, he lost his whole family. When the ship they were on, was sinking in the Pacific Ocean. Pi and Richard Parker, the tiger, were the only survivor and he communicated with the tiger to lose his sadness. Then, they stayed on the same boat, thus he felt scared to the tiger and he played with the tiger to overcome his fear. Additionally, he also had physical conflict while staying on the same boat with the tiger because he had to strive to feed him, therefore, he should give a food to the tiger. Further, Piscine Molitor Patel also underwent social conflict with his friends. They thought that “Piscine Molitor Patel” name was ridiculous thus they made a joke and bullied him because of it. Accordingly, he explained his name in every new class that his name was Pi. It can be concluded that the main character in “Life of Pi” movie directed by Ang Lee faced three kinds of individual conflicts; psychological conflict, social conflict, and physical conflict.
