- This research based on comprehension that in the collection of short stories Nyanyian Imigran (Collection of Short Stories of Indonesian Migrant Workers) presents a number of lessons about structure and retention mechanism of the main figure soul. Generally, this research purpose to obtain a description of the atmosphere an objective about structure and retention mechanism of the main figure soul in a collection of short stories titled Nyanyian Imigran (Collection of Short Stories of Indonesian Migrant Workers). The problems in this research are: (1) how did the structure relate with the id, ego, and superego, (2) how did the retention mechanism of the soul relate with repression, placing a false, and rationalization, (3) how the relationship structure and retention mechanism of the main figure soul in a collection of short stories Nyanyian Imigran (Collection of Short Stories of Indonesian Migrant Workers). This research used psychology approach which is emphasized in psychology character in psychoanalysis Sigmund Freud, whereas the method used is qualitative description. Data in this research form structure and retention mechanism of the main figure soul in a collection of short stories Nyanyian Imigran (Collection of Short Stories of Indonesian Migrant Workers). Data acquisition techniques in this research are technical documentation, is look for data relating with a collection of short stories. As for the data processing techniques done with how to create a corpus of data, create data code, classify and selecting data, enter data that has been given a code to crawl table, and interpreting data in accordance with theory of psychoanalysis Sigmund Freud. Based on the analysis results can be concluded that; Id structure form of encouragement primitive of the main figure related with instinct of human life that must be achieved and satisfied. Ego structure form decision of the main character's (implementer id structure) to reduce stress in self with form of act related in real life. Superego structure forms of encouragement of the main figure to do a good behavior with following norms in society. Retention mechanism of the soul repression can be form of the main figure deeds to calm himself/ herself from the worries by stressing the id to the under conscious world. Rationalization in the form of deeds the main character garble reality which is experiencing. Of form structure and retention mechanism of the soul the main character there is a relationship interrelated between structure and retention mechanism of the soul. Retention mechanism the main character trying as hard as possible keep stability, adjust, and protect yourself the structure of reality (ego), id, superego of danger impulses to assuage excessive anxiety within the main character.
