A STUDY ON THE STUDENTS’ LEARNING BEHAVIOR IN SPEAKING CLASS IN ENGLISH DEPARTMENT OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MUHAMMADIYAH MALANG

  • Students’ learning behavior has big influence towards students’ learning process especially in speaking class. It is an energy that supports the students to do their activities well and it results a good behavior of the students in a speaking class. By having a good learning behavior, good condition for effective teaching and learning can be reached. In addition, students’ learning behavior characteristics can influence the students’ learning behavior in learning speaking. Therefore, the reseacher wants to investigate: (1) The students’ learning behaviors in learning speaking at the third semester students in English Department of UMM and (2) the factors caused the students’ learning behavior characteristics in learning speaking. In this study, the reseacher applied qualitative design to get the data. The data were collected from the students of the third semester, and the speaking teacher . The data were collected by giving questionnaire to the students, interviewing the teacher and observing the students in a speaking class. Based on the data analysis, 39 students (two classes) became the sample of this study. The research finding showed that from 39 students (two classes), 9 students (24.45 %) had learning characteristics within the individual, 12 students (28.3 %) had learning characteristics located within the wider community or social context, 5 students (14.85 %) had learning characteristics within the learning environment (including the classroom, the school, pedagogy, ethos), and 13 students (31.89 %) had learning characteristics within the curriculum. Furthermore, the most learning characteristics applied by the students in two classes are learning characteristic within curriculum (31.89 %). Some factors that influenced students’ learning behavior characteristics were genetic causes, family factors, classroom setting, challenging teaching, good lessons plan, and good classroom condition. It means that this characteristic influenced by good communication between teacher and students, focus on the lesson, challenging teaching provides by their teacher in learning speaking, and good classroom atmosphere. The students’ learning behaviors in speaking class was influenced by their characteristics in learning speaking.
