- One of the education problems in Indonesia is that Indonesian students have low reading motivation. The low reading motivation may have an impact on the education quality. Considering that reading is a primary need in education, there is no doubt that students’ reading motivation plays an important role in students’ achievement. Related with the statement above, this research was conducted to know the first year students’ reading motivation in learning English at SMK Muhammadiyah II Malang. In doing the research, the researcher used descriptive research design with qualitative approach. On December 21st to 24th 2009, 20 students who belonged to the first year students were given a questionnaire and interviewed. The questionnaire consisted of 15 items and used unstructured interviewed. The results of the answer were presented in form of percentage and descriptive data. It was found that students’ reading motivation was low. The result showed that the percentage was 36.63% for the students’ motivation in some items, 34.75% for the students’ motivation occasionally in some items, and 28.62% for the students who did not have motivation. Those are including intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation. At last, hopefully the result of this study could give benefits for the students, the teachers and the school.
