  • Playing is an activity where children can make or practice the skills, give expression to the thought, be creative, to prepare and behave in an adult role (Hidayat, 2004). Entering the world of school, the kids seemed to lose their world. Given the demands of the times and the rapid scientific forcing parents to fill her children with a variety of learning activities either in school or outside school so that their time to play did not exist. This study aims to identify needs and the type of game play on school-age children. The study design was descriptive with variable needs to play and the types of games on school age children. The population in this study is Muhammadiyah 9 Malang elementary school students from grade 1-5 with a sample taken a number of 75 students. The sampling technique used is proportionate stratified random sampling. This research is taken by using open and closed questionnaire. From the research results obtained needs to play (59%) of respondents simply needs to play, (32%) respondents needs to play well, and (9%) needs to play less. While the results of research type of game there are two criteria, the first based on game content is obtained (43%) classified as play skills, (33%) classified as unoccupied behavior, (19%) classified as dramatic, and games.Second, based on the social character of obtained results (75%) classified as cooperative play, and (28%) classified as associative play. From the results of this study can be concluded that many respondents that meet the needs of play is not optimal even though the game was in accordance with the development of school age children. Therefore, it is expected that parents and teachers can facilitate the needs of children playing.
