  • Primary dysmenorrhea is a painful menstruation, without pathological pelvis that can be identified. Increased prostaglandin F2 alpha excessive hyperactivity stimulates uterine contractions lead to increased frequency and pattern of irregular contractions that cause pain. One non-pharmacological therapies used to treat primary dysmenorrhea is to eat yogurt as much as 500 ml per day. Mechanism of action of yoghurt in reducing the intensity of pain in primary dysmenorrhea through the inhibition of serotonin and endhorphine. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of yogurt to decrease the intensity of pain in clients with primary dysmenorrhea. The method used is a quasi-experimental design using pretest and post test approach to the control group. The subjects of this study were women aged 18-22 years in the region Sumbersari, research conducted from July to October 2010. Research subjects is obtained as many as 30 people with 15 research subjects as the treatment group and 15 subjects as control group. The samples are purposive sampling. Techniques of collecting data using interviews and observation methods. Hepotesa test using t - test independently. The results obtained, before treatment was given in the form of yogurt consumption, 73% experienced pain intensity moderate, and 27% experienced severe pain intensity. In the control group 67% of subjects experienced pain intensity were and 27% experienced mild pain intensity. In the treatment group after being fed yoghurt 500 ml, 40% of subjects obtained 2 values decreased pain intensity, 33% experienced a reduction of 3 values, 20% had decreased the value 4, and 7% suffered permanent pain, which means that 40% experienced decreased pain moderate and 33% experienced more moderate decrease in pain. Based on statistical analysis obtained by the independent t-test t value 8.626 and 2.048 t table with 95% significant level. Because t count> t table, it can be concluded that administration of yoghurt effectively reduce pain in primary dysmenorrhea women aged 18-22 years in the region Sumbesari. Based on the results of statistical tests, the yogurt should be used as one method an alternative to reduce the intensity of pain in primary dysmenorrhea.
