  • Carburizing is a process of adding carbon (C) is diffusion on the surface of the material thereby increasing the hardness of metal (Suherman, 1988:147). Carburizing process used on low carbon steel, one of which is steel St 41 which has a hardness of 241.7 HV and 0.16% carbon. Steel St 41, coconut shell and Ba CO3 included in the holding furnace with 30, 45 and 60 minutes at a temperature of 900oC. This study was conducted for the effect of variation menegetahui holding time of the hardness. Statistical test (one way ANOVA) results showed that 30 minutes of holding 389.4 HV holding 45 min 565.4 HV and holding 60 min 671.4 HV, The longer the holding time the pearlite increasingly dominant and diffusion thickness increases this proves that violence rose as the dominant element of pearlite and increased thickness of diffusion.
