- Pipe API 5L-X65 steel pipe is made and manufactured based on the standard API (American Petroleum Institute). These pipes have carbon content of 0.26% which is classified in the medium carbon steel. In the book (Wiryosumarto, 2000) mentioned are carbon steel has good weldability level compared with high carbon steel. There are several factors which greatly affect the strength of metals including carbon content contained in these metals, high temperature heating (austenising temprature), holding time (homogenity austenite), and the speed of cooling(quenching). The purpose of the research is to determine the level of toughness of steel API 5L-X65 with treatment steep quenching. The test is done by heating the material at a temperature of 900 Âo C, 1000 Âo C and 1100 Âo C hold for 30 minutes after it cooled quickly with water cooling media. Then using the Rockwell hardness test and microstructure observation. From the research rockwell hardness test method that has been done, it can be concluded that treatment with heat treatment at temperatures of 1000 Âo C with a temperature holding time 30 min and cooling using water cooling media can show kekerasanyang highest value on the connection pipe 5L - X65. On microstructural observations seen in specimens that have been done with PWHT temperatures of 900 Âo C, the parent metal parts pearlite impairment compared with raw material specimens. This leads to reduced levels of the metal hardness.
