- Poverty experienced by rural communities living in the forest makes them desperate to make land use at the forest as a source of livelihood and life. In this condition, making the search for life in the forest that can encourage forest damage that may have occurred in forest conservation. On the other side of the conservation area should still be preserved because of its role as a buffer of life. To maintain the function of conservation areas should be safe from any kind of threat. The purpose of this study were: 1) Gain an understanding of the socio-economic conditions of the communities, so as to maintain the sustainability of the park with the involvement of forest communities, 2) Knowing how much public perception surrounding Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park on the importance of conservation, 3) Review form of empowerment by the government in the conservation of forests. Methods: This study was conducted in May 2012, in the village of Pandansari, Poncokusumo District, Malang. The research method used in this research is qualitative. There is also the technique of respondents conducted by snowball sampling. Respondents who selected the people who move within the national park,and the surrounding community. The result showed that 100% of respondents did not know the meaning of conservation and the existence TNBTS. Factors that ignorance will be a background due to conservation education only up to primary school (SD) that is equal to 94% and given the lack of socialization of managers TNBTS to society. Utilization of forest resources is included in the category of age, ie 25-65 years. Urgency of economic and social welfare level is low making people look for employment in the forest. Forest resource user communities profession dominated by the agricultural sector with an income of Rp 150,000 - Rp 300,000, - per month. No managers TNBTS empowerment given to villagers Pandansari. Society wants preserved forests as forests play an important role in supplying water main forest resources. Thus, it can facilitate the cultivation of plantations and agriculture in addition to plant woody plants.
