- This research was conducted to answer the research questions; 1) Errors made by the students with Field Independent (FI) cognitive style to solve the algebra operations; 2) Errors made by the students with Field Dependent (FD) cognitive style to solve the algebra operations; 3) Error factors which were done by the students with Field Independent (FI) cognitive style to solve the algebra operations; 4) Error factors which were done by the students with Field Dependent (FD) cognitive style to solve the algebra operations. The research was categorized as qualitative descriptive which emphasized on the case study. The subject of this research was the students of VII B grade at SMP Negeri I Lenteng. The data collection was using questionnaire, test, and interviews. The questionnaire was given before they did the test. The test was given only once after the submission about algebra then continued by interviewing the students who were done the test. Based on data analysis, the researcher found that: 1) the errors made by the students with Field Independent (FI) cognitive style in VII B grade at SMP Negeri 1 Lenteng in resolving algebra questions in which the errors found in algebra concepts such as distributive, multiple fractions, changed division fraction to multiple fractions, and the operational errors of reduction, multiplication, and division; 2) errors made by the students with Field Dependent (FD) cognitive style in VII B grade at SMP Negeri 1 Lenteng in resolving algebra questions in which the errors found in algebra concepts such as distributive; errors include the sum of fractions and multiplication algebra form (ax + b)(cx + d); operating errors include subtraction operation and division; 3) factors that cause errors made by the students with Field Independent (FI) cognitive style in VII B grade at SMP Negeri 1 Lenteng in resolving algebra questions is lack of understanding about the concept of distributive properties of multiplication to subtraction, multiplication of fractions of the algebra and how to change fractions into multiplication division fractions; not accurate in calculating the reduction is due to re-examine the answer, and lack of understanding about the operations of multiplication and division of algebra forms; 4) factors that cause errors made by the students with Field Independent (FI) cognitive style in VII B grade at SMP Negeri 1 Lenteng in resolving algebra questions is a lack of understanding about the concept of distributive properties of multiplication to subtraction; do not understand how to complete the sum of fractions of the algebra because the students did not know the concept of the determination of the commission and multiplication of the algebra; cannot understand how the workmanship about multiplication algebra form (ax+b)(cx+d); not accurate in calculating the reduction due to re-examine the results of the answer; and do not understand the operation of the division algebra form.
