- In mathematical learning, problem solving in real life is usually stated in the form of word problems. But in fact the students in solving word problems still frequently make mistakes. The method can be used to analyze student errors is the method of Newman Error Analysis. There are five stages in the Newman Error Analysis methods are: reading, comprehension, transformation, process skills, and encoding. This study aimed to describe: (1) mistake students in completing word problems, and (2) the forms of the mistakes made by students in solving word problems. Subject to the quantitative-descriptive study was 20 students of class VIII Junior High School 3 Malang Aisyiyah academic year 2013/2014. The analysis in this study was developed based on indicators of problem solving skills based on the stages of Newman. The results showed that the most frequent mistakes students in solving word problems lies in the transformation stage. The errors in the reading stage, namely: write less precise meaning of the word, write the meaning of an obscure word meaning, and not write down all the meanings of words. The errors at the stage of comprehension, namely: one known component write, write briefly known components, and do not write complete unknown components. The errors in the phase transformation, namely: write down the wrong method, and did not write a complete method. The errors at the stage of process skills, namely: compute the method is wrong, made a mistake in computing, the concept of making mistakes, and did not write the settlement procedure. The errors in the encoding phase, namely: writing down the wrong encoding, encoding wrote with units that do not fit, write less correct encoding, and not write encoding.
