  • The important thing in the main subject of cubes and blocks volume is the ability to understand concept and how to apply it in the daily life. It is because we will find many cases or problems related to cubes and blocks that need a deeper thought. Realistic mathematics learning-based character is one way that can be used to instill students’ understanding through the reality and to train them to think critically by instilling the values of characters in it. The purposes of this study are (1) to describe the process of learning realistic mathematics-based character on eight grade students of junior high school, (2) to investigate students’ responses towards learning realistic mathematics-based characters on cubes and blocks volume, (3) to train studentÂ’s ability to think critically on the volume of cubes and blocks subject. The research was conducted in SMP Ar-Rohmah Putri which is located in Dau, Malang by taking VIIIA class as the research subject. The class consisted of 20 students. Instrument in this study is a learning instrument in the form of lesson plans (RPP), LKS, worksheet (pretest and final test), observation sheets and questionnaire. On the discovery cube formula process, students are able to fill properly the worksheet in group, then they find a cube formula volume is side x side x side or s3. So it does for the block volume, students are also able to answer correctly all of worksheets and find the block volume formula which is length x width x height. The observation result of implementation of realistic mathematics learning-based character process on the cubes and blocks volume materials is 91 % with very good criteria. The students’ responses toward realistic mathematics learning-based character on cubes and blocks volume material are positive. The result of the first critical thinking test shows that most of the students are less critical and or even not critical, whereas the result of final critical thinking test shows that 10 students are very critical, 7 students are in the middle level of critical and 3 students are quite critical. Thereby, it is concluded that to train students of VIIIA class Ar-Rohmah Putri Malang to think on the material cubes and blocks volume can use realistic mathematics learning-based character.
