- Background: Formaldehyde was misused especially in food industry. Oral Formaldehyde exposure can cause iritation of gastrointestinal tract, one of them is esophagitis. It can also cause esophageal carcinoma in chronic exposure. The mechanism of formaldehyde action to change esophageal mucosal cell possibility as DNA crossÂlinked by protein so that disturbe normal expression gene. Objective: The aim of research is to show or prove the influence orally subacute formaldehyde toward esophageal mucosal of experimental rat (rattus norvegicus strain wistar). Method & sample: The research of the study was pure experiment by using The Posttest Control Group Design. Sample of the research was some experimental mouse which divided into 4 groups. The first group as a control, without formaldehyde exposure and another groups were given with formaldehyde doses 10 ppm, 40 ppm and 80 ppm. Result and discussion: The results of this research are formaldehyde can give some effects suchas hyperplasia, hypertrophic, atropic, inflamed, metaplasia and dysplasia (ANOVA p=0.000). There was significan correlation between experimental dose and hyperplasia, hypertrophic, atropic, inflamed, metaplasia and dyspasia (Sig<0,05). The effects of experimental dose toward number of hyperplasia, hypertrophic, atropic, inflamed, metaplasia and dysplasia (hyperplasia r2=0.220, hypertrophic r2=0.222, atropic r2=0.792, inflamed r2=0.666, metaplasia r2=0.636, dysplasia r2=0.904). ). Conclusions: Formaldehyde can cause change of esophageal mucosal lumen diameter and esophageal mucosal thickening macroscopicly. It also can cause change of mucosal cell (hyperplasia, hypertrophic, atropic, inflamed, metaplasia and dysplasia) microscopicly.
