- This research was aimed to know the student’s abstraction in learning Geometry based on Van Hiele. On the other hand, geometry, one of branch in mathematics, still become the bogey for many students, specially student SMP. But that way, geometry is a part of Math which studies about visual patterns that will connect Math with real world. Geometry can be seen as a Math system which shows abstract phenomenon (unreal), but the learning is processed gradually which is begun with real objects as a media which appropriates with the children development phase. At theory Van Hiele told that in studying the geometry, natural students growth of ability think passing the selected phases, that is visualization (level of 0), analysis (level of 1), abstraction (level of 2), deduction (level of 3), and rigor (level of 4). This research used descriptive qualitative research design. The subject of the research was the students of VIII C in SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Malang. The instruments used to collect the data were test and interview. The data analysis used descriptive analysis towards the process of the students abstraction in solving the problem based on Van Hiele phase. The result of the research showed that the abstraction of visualization was high because the students had already recognized the geometry forms especially cube. Whereas, The student’s abstraction in analysis phase was low, because there were still many students who can’t use the characteristics of cube properly. Then, the student’s abstraction in informal deductive phase was categorized low, because the students could not abstract the concepts; the students couldn’t put the characteristics of cube concept in the right order, they couldn’t connect between the characteristics of Geometry model in the questions and they couldn’t find and conclude the result of their rationale properly in solving the problem. The aspect often emerge that is aspect representation mathematics idea in the form of symbol or mathematics Language.
