English Department interested in choosing translation subject. Thus, the purposes of this study 
are to find out the factors which make the sixth semester students interested in choosing the 
translation subject and to know the students’ expectations in following the translation subject. 
The research design of this study was descriptive research. The population of this study was the 
sixth semester students of English Department who had taken the translation subject. Meanwhile, 
for the instrument, the researcher used questionnaire as a tool to know the factors that made 
students interested in choosing the translation subject. This study used percentage in analyzing 
the data. 
The findings show that there were six factors which made the sixth semester students interested 
in choosing the translation subject. Out of 69 students, 35 students (50.8%) chose the translation 
subject because they wanted to have more understanding in reading English books, 33 students 
(46.4%) chose it because they agreed that translation played an important role in international 
communication, 45 students (65.2%) said translation subject could help them in improving their 
skill in translating, 45 students (65.2%) stated that their interest in translation subject arises 
because of the difficulties that they faced caused by the lacked of vocabularies which arise their 
curiosity to learn more about translation, 42 students (60.8%) said that they were interested in 
translation because they did not have ability to be translators or interpreters, and 23 students 
(33.4%) stated they were interested in translation subject because they liked to translate English 
texts into Indonesian ,or vice versa, in their spare time. 
In addition, related to the answer of the second problem, there were three students’ expectations 
in following the translation subject. It was found out that 47 students (68.1%) expected 
translation subject could improve their translation skill in the short-term, 29 students (40.2%) 
expected translation subject could facilitate them in getting a job in their future and 39 students 
(49.3%) had expectation to their lecture who teach translation subject to use the appropriate
