- The learning process will be more meaningful if the students not only knowing the knowledge but also having an own experiences on what they learned. On the other hand, the learning process would be nice if the students are motivated in doing the learning process. One things that teachers can do to provide motivation to students in the learning process, is by presenting an example in real life (based on context) related to the material that will be discussed. The Learning approach that links between the real world of matters with students is called a contextual approach. This study aimed to describe the application of a contextual approach in teaching mathematics through observation of teacher activity and student activity. In addition, this study is also to determine the students? learning results that obtained after conducting a test and students' response after performing the learning activities. This study used qualitative research design as an approach. This research was conducted in April 2011 in class VIII-A SMP Negeri 12 Malang, which is contains of 39 students. The data was obtained by doing observation, giving a test, giving student questionnaire responses, and doing documentation. The results of this study by using a contextual approach in learning solid figure on flat side showed that the learning process which teacher and student do are running well. It was shown by the results of the analysis of teachers and students activity in conducting learning activities were reached 79.66%. It can be concluded into the category of very good standard. The percentage of student activity reached 74.68%. It can be concluded into the good category. While the students? learning results obtained after conducting a learning process for 39 students, 36 students have achieved an individual mastery. The percentage of the learning result mastery is classically reached the number of 92.31%, which means that classically students have completed the achievement test. Students have a good respond to learn by applying contextual approach, it was shown by the responses of students who reach the percentage of 60.21 which are categorized as strong, which means students have a well respond in learning.
