- Mostly covered forests, Indonesia becomes one of the countries with the vastest tropical forest and the richest biodiversity in the world. As forest function as the people’s livelihood, many people live both inside and around the forests. specifically, this study involved the inhabitants around the forest in Garon Village, Kawedanan District, Magetan Regency. This study aimed at (1) Describing the social condition of the families around the forest, (2) Investigating the economic condition of the families around the forest based on their level of incomes and expenses, (3) Investigating the correlation between social and economic factors (the level of incomes and expenses), (4) Investigating the needy families’ awareness about the importance of the forest conservation related to its function as the main source of their livelihood (low, moderate, high), and (5) investigating the correlation between the socioeconomic factor of the needy families around the forest and their level of awareness about conserving the forest in Garon Village, Kawedanan District, Magetan Regency. This study employed descriptive and correlational ( X2 ) analysis methods in analyzing the data. The findings revealed that: most of the population were in the productive ages. The education level of the population were categorized low. The number of the dependents in the families were considered many. Most of the respondents had two children. The infant mortality rate in the population was low. The educations level of the respondents’ children was moderate. Most of the respondent mainly worked as farmers. In average the respondents had already had permanent houses. In average the respondents assets were in the forms of lands and television. In general, most of the respondents were in debts. Accordingly, the economic condition of the respondent’ in terms of income and expenses was considered low. However, compared to the respondents’ level of incomes, the expenses were considered higher. In addition, there was no correlation between social variable and economic variable (incomes), while the economic variable (expenses) correlated with social variable (numbers of dependents). Generally, the respondents were highly aware to conserve the forest resources due to the frequency of the forest resource utilization. Besides, there was no correlation between the social variable and the awareness level of conservation. Indeed, while there was no significant correlation between economic variable (incomes) and the awareness level of conservation, the economic variable (expenses) significantly correlated to the latter.
