- Background: The bacterial meningitis disease still becomes a prominent incident against children in the developing countries. It has high rate for death, sickness and disability, leading to its consideration as a very dangerous disease. Data collected throughout Indonesia cannot be ensured, but few cities report such cases. Objective: To search for the information about the description of acute bacterial meningitis disease against children treated at Dr Soetomo Surabaya General Hospital in the period of January 1 of 2007 to December 31 of 2008. Method: Retrospective descriptive, obtained from Health Medical Record of childbased acute bacterial meningitis in the period of January 1 of 2007 to December 31 of 2008. Results: Acute bacterial meningitis occurs at 014 years old children with 24 patients by inclusion criteria; at 0≤12 months old children with 15 patients (62 %), 1≤3 years old children with 4 patients (17 %), 3≤5 years old children with 3 patients (13 %), 514 years old childrenwith 2 patients (18 %), male with 14 patients (58 %), female with 10 patients (42%), great nutrient status with 5 patients (21 %), good nutrient with 3 patients (12%), medium nutrient with 5 patients (21 %), less nutrient with 10 patients (42 %), bad nutrient with 1 patient (4 %). The occupation of patient’s parent will be: private worker with 15 patients (63 %), driver with 2 patients (8 %), laborer with 5 patients (21 %), and farmer with 2 patients (8 %). Some bacteria have been found with patient: Haemophylus influenzae with 14 patients, Escherichia coli with 4 patients, Candida with 4 patients, negative Stafilococcus coagulate with 4 patients, Streptococcus with 7 patients, Enterobacter aerogenes with 1 patient, Klebsiella pneumonia with 1 patient, Acineteobacter with 1 patient. Conclusion: The greatest rate of susceptible age may be at 0≤ 2 months age, dominated by male with bad nutrient. The most defined parental occupation refers to the private worker. Hemophylus influenzae represents the most usually found bacterium at 0≤12 months and 1≤ 3 years.
