- Literature is a product from human thinking. By reading literary works especially novel, the readers can improve their understanding about life in every aspect. Novel is also a picture of human behavior and signal of time which it was written. This research aims to find out the Erin Gruwell’s teaching writing strategies and the students’ responses toward her strategies. This research design used descriptive qualitative. The researcher focused on deep understanding of Gruwell’s teaching writing strategies. The study observed the phenomenon in teaching writing strategies and students’ responses toward teaching writing strategies by Gruwell. The result of the research shows that first; Gruwell used two teaching writing strategies. Those are: free writing and revised writing. Furthermore, the implementation of those strategies in the class could help students to improve their writing skill technically and fluent writers. Second, the students’ responses accepted those strategies. Students not also changed into higher skill but also changed their mind set and personality out. The researcher found students’ responses showed cognitive, affective and behavioral response. Cognitive responses showed that students changed their mind set. Affective responses showed the student felt sympathy to others. And Behavioral responses indicated students can accept each other.
